One of the first things I always ask clients to provide me with before starting a website build on is a list of all the pages required, including child pages (ones that sit within others) so I can form the basis of the site map.

This then enables me to flesh out the navigation bar and footer, ironing out any issues before adding the content and making it look pretty! Sometimes small businesses can overlook this process, it can be a lengthy one and often the boring part of building a website, but user navigation in my opinion, is THE most important aspect of good website design.

I know from a personal user journey, if it takes me longer than 3 seconds to find basic things such as the contact us/blog/checkout pages then I click away. Don’t let potential customers or clients do the same, ensure you have a clear, succinct site map ready to act as a template when starting your web build.
