The hashtag. It’s a funny little symbol that didn’t used to mean much but in the Insta age it stands for so much more. If you’re a small business using Instagram or social media in general to generate traffic to your website or shop front then it’s essential that you use hashtags to get yourself seen.

People use hashtags to search for things they are interested in or locations they want to know more about. If something is trending there is generally a hashtag related to it to make that topic easily searchable.

*TOP TIP* Make a list of hashtags that are relevant to your business and pop them in your notes so that you can reuse them again and again when you go to post to your feed. It means you don’t have to take an age compiling the list because on Instagram, time is everything. You also must re-visit these hashtags regularly and make sure you have the most up to date ones as things move so quickly and you could be missing out.
